Currently Academic Portfolio Lead for Design in the School of Design + Creative Industries at University of Greenwich, I have directed and taught courses on material culture and object studies, histories and theories of design, design politics and design ethics, the creative and culture industry with special attention to professional design practice and placements, research methods for critical and contextual studies and undergraduate dissertations in art and design history.
I love teaching at the intersection of objects, words and archives, especially in programmes where there is a collapse of the theory-practice divide. I am particularly interested in teaching experimental research methods and writing around and through visual and material culture.
I have previously worked at the University for the Creative Arts, Central St. Martins University of the Arts London, Goldsmiths University of London, Royal College of Art, University of Westminster and Kingston School of Art.
At University for the Creative Arts, I taught into the new MA and BA Visual Communications programmes working across theory and practice. I convened the Authorial Narrative unit, writing the brief The Kentish Book of Folk, Fairytale and Myth for the second-year illustration and animation students. We had an exhibition of their work at the Ramsgate Music Hall in March 2023. At Central St. Martins, I taught cultural studies and critical theory to undergraduate product and industrial design students, drawing on my teaching specialism in design philosophy, design politics and design ethics.
At Goldsmiths I was the programme lead for the BA Design, and taught across both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in postdisciplinary design, and across the theory-practice divide. With my colleague Dr. Nina Trivedi, I wrote and convened the brief called I Am Your No.1 Fan, which centred on cultures and practices of fandom, for the MA Design. This brief was based on a short course we wrote called Prince Studies, which set out to explore topics and themes in visual and material culture through the life and practice of the artist Prince. I also convened the MA Design’s Shared Lecture series that explores histories, theories, methods, processes and practices of postdisciplinary design.
Prior to Goldsmiths, I was Senior Tutor in Critical & Historical Studies for the School of Design at the Royal College of Art, where I directed the delivery of critical and historical studies across postgraduate programmes in Design Products, Global Innovation Design, Innovation Design Engineering, Vehicle Design, Service Design, Fashion, and Textiles.
